Polychlorinated Biphenyls: These are better known as PCB’s and are used as coolants and lubricants in transformers and some models of microwave ovens and refrigerators. Now, these were banned in the U.S. in the late 1970s, but the problem is they are extremely long lasting compounds that stay in our environment for a very long time. Plus, the old systems that they were used in are in many cases, still being used. The EPA considers these compounds to be probable causes of cancer .

Perfluorooctanic Acids: Shown to cause liver toxicity and developmental problems in lab rats. These chemicals are used to make  non-stick and stain resistant products. Some studies have even suggested that these compounds could be linked to cancer in humans .

Bisphenol A: This is a chemical that is used in the manufacture of baby bottles and food containers to make plastics hard. A link between exposure to this chemical  and reproductive  disorders such as cystic ovaries and cancer have been sited in a study published in the Journal of Reproductive Toxicology .

Phthalates: Preliminary studies have shown that exposure to this  group of chemicals can be associated in humans with infertility problems in men as well as genital birth defects in men.
The upsetting thing is this group of chemicals is used in so many things that we come into contact with on a daily basis. It is used to make plastics soft and pliable. Thus it is found in plastic bottles, containers, kitchen wrap,  medical devices and toys of all kinds.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers: This group of chemicals  has been shown in studies with lab rats to cause thyroid, liver and neurological damage . This is a product that is everywhere, because it is a type of commercial flame-retardant that is used in foam products, and therefore our own laws require manufacturers to use it in mattresses, foam pillows, couches and carpets.

By reading this you are educating yourself on some of the many environmental toxins that we are exposed to in modern society. These are chemicals that mostly, were not around a generation or so ago. Yet, this is just a small fraction of the harmful chemicals out there that we are exposed to.

What can we do? Educate yourself. Read labels on everything you buy and try to limit yourself in using  some of these products. Eat fresh, not microwaved or frozen foods. Know that your body is like a sponge that is always being exposed to chemicals and toxins that it is holding on to, and which are contributing to the  body burden.
